Or really, don’t.
I work for a fairly well known company. There is a certain cache in name checking any of the Fortune 100 companies.
Turns out there are a lot of upstarts out there who are looking to be seen as valuable based mainly on who they have on their customer list.
They will even put a dollar value on it. As in, let us issue a press release about the existence of a contract, and we’ll take X dollars out of the quote.
In other words, they want to wh*re out my company’s name. Because we are successful, they wanna ride the coattails.
I’m not cool with that. My PR group is CERTAINLY not cool with that.
And when I tell these upstart suppliers that I’m not interested in pimping out my company, they seem shocked. Then they get snotty.
I tell them, “we worked really hard to earn our reputation. We’re not going to gamble that on any fly by night that wants to steal our logo from the website.”
They tell me how much more that will cost me.
That’s when I tell them to go pound sand. Or something like it.
Ah, the art of negotiation.
